When Bananas are cheap, I live on smoothies. They are convenient, taste great, and are mostly healthy. When I was pregnant with my first child, I loved the Wendy’s Banana Wheat Germ Smoothies however, I had to put a stop to this once I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, and find a more healthy alternative that would keep my blood sugars in check, and the dietician off my back.
My Banana Wheat Germ Smoothie is a yummy alternative to the sweet Wendy’s smoothies. When keeping my Gestational Diabetes in check, I would usually drink this as an afternoon snack. Or as a morning breakfast on-the-go.
Wheat Germ is loaded with folic acid, something all pregnant women know is a factor in ensuring a healthy baby during pregnancy. It boosts the immune system, improves stamina, reduces the risk of diabetes and helps to feel fuller longer. Wheat Germ is high in calories, so it does pay to monitor how much of it you are consuming if it is a regular part of your diet.
Banana and Wheat Germ Recipe
200 Mls Full Cream Milk
2 Teaspoons Wheat Germ
2 Teaspoons Akta-Vite or Milo
10 Grams Honey
4 Ice Cubes
Place all ingredients into Thermomix and Mix 1 minute, Speed 9, MC on.
Tips and Alternatives
Add 1 – 2 teaspoons of Coffee for a Choc/Coffee flavour
Replace Akta-Vite or Milo with Coffee or Cacao
Replace Honey with Maple Syrup or 5 grams of Coconut Sugar or omit completely for a reduced sugar option
Add 1 – 2 scoops of Ice cream. I was always advised by dieticians the Bulla Light Ice cream is diabetic friendly in small amounts each day (approximately 2 small scoops)
Akta-Vite, Milo and Wheat Germ all contain gluten and should be avoided by anyone with an intolerance.
